The Detective. A trench coat, a fedora, and a magnifying glass prop go a long way. Add suspenders and a loosened tie for a "worked through the night" look.

The Femme Fatale. A dark, fitted dress or gown, a long cigarette holder (unlit, for effect only), opera-length gloves, and deep red lipstick. Vintage-style finger waves or a sleek low bun complete it.

The Butler or Household Staff. A black waistcoat, white shirt, black bow tie, and a folded white cloth over one arm. One of the easiest costumes to assemble from items most people already own.

The Socialite / Heiress. Pearls, a fascinator or feathered headpiece, long gloves, and an ornate brooch. Lean into oversized statement jewelry — it reads as wealth from across a room.

The Gangster. A pinstripe suit or vest, suspenders, a flat cap or fedora, and a fake cigar. A pocket watch on a chain adds a nice period detail.

The Colonel / Military Type. A blazer with pinned faux medals, a mustache (real or stick-on), and a swagger stick or cane.

The Doctor. A white coat or vintage-style medical vest, a stethoscope, and round wire-frame glasses.

Budget-Friendly Sourcing

• Thrift and charity shops are the single best source for waistcoats, blazers, gloves and costume jewelry.
• Borrow before you buy — a formalwear-heavy friend group usually already owns half of what's needed.
• Print, don't sew. A printed name tag or lanyard with a character's name and title does more identifying work than an elaborate costume.
• One statement piece beats a full outfit. A single fedora, brooch, or prop weapon reads clearly even over ordinary black clothing.

A Note on Prop Weapons

If your kit includes a "weapon" prop (candlestick, knife, pistol), keep it clearly fake — bright colors, obviously plastic materials, or a small tag reading "prop" — especially for events with guests who don't know each other well, or anywhere it might be seen by people outside the party.
