Murder Mystery Invitation Ideas
Your invitation is the first clue guests receive — it sets tone before anyone walks through the door, and it's doing real logistical work at the same time. Here's how to get both right.
What Every Invitation Needs
- Date, time and location — obvious, but easy to bury under theming. Keep it legible.
- Dress code or costume expectation, with a link or note to your costume ideas if guests are new to the format.
- RSVP deadline, ideally 1–2 weeks before the event so you have time to finalize character assignments.
- A request for dietary restrictions — ask here, not on the night.
- A hint of the mystery's theme (1920s gala, corporate retreat gone wrong, family estate) without spoiling plot details.
Format Ideas
The "Case File" invite. Design it like a confidential dossier — a manila folder graphic, a redacted line or two of text, and "CLASSIFIED" stamped across the top. Works beautifully as a printable PDF or physical mailed card.
The Formal Gala Card. Cream or black cardstock, a wax seal (real or printed), and elegant script typography for a more upscale, black-tie mystery theme.
The Digital Teaser. A short video or animated graphic sent via group chat/email revealing only the crime ("A body has been found at Blackwood Manor...") without naming characters yet, followed by a separate character assignment message closer to the date.
The Newspaper Clipping. Style the invite as a vintage "breaking news" front page reporting the crime guests will investigate — a fun way to plant early clues or red herrings before the party even starts.

You are cordially — and urgently — summoned to Blackwood Manor on Saturday, the 14th, at 7:00pm. A member of the household has met an untimely end, and among tonight's guests is the one responsible. Come dressed for the occasion. Come prepared to lie.
When to Send Character Assignments
If your kit assigns individual characters with backstories, send those 2–3 weeks before the event — enough time to plan a costume (see our costume guide) and read their material, but not so far out they forget the details. A short reminder email 2–3 days before the party, with the address, time and any last logistics, is worth sending regardless of how far ahead the original invite went out.
